About Leafcutter News
One Edition. Once a Day.
Each day, we publish a single edition featuring up to 10 of the most consequential stories in the United States and around the world.
We prioritize significance over popularity, providing a manageable snapshot of the day's news. Some days may have fewer than 10 stories. The goal isn't to cover everything, but to cover what matters most.
The Full Story, Not Just One Perspective
Each story begins with a concise summary drawn from multiple news organizations, highlighting the essential facts and context.
When publications agree, we present the shared account. When they differ, we show how their coverage changes through emphasis, framing, selected facts, or missing context.
The goal is to help readers understand both what happened and how the story is being told.
Beyond Today's Headlines
Important stories don't stop mattering when they leave the front page.
Our Ongoing Stories section follows major developments over time, providing background, timelines, and current context even when there isn't a new headline.
These stories remain accessible as a historical reference, helping readers understand how today's events connect to the past.
Our Methodology
Selecting Stories
We use AI to help identify and select up to 10 stories each day based on their significance, potential consequences, and broader impact.
We aim for a balance of U.S. and international coverage, while allowing the importance of events to guide the selection.
Building the Summary
Our news summaries are AI-generated, using reporting from multiple established publications.
AI synthesizes the available coverage to identify key facts, provide context, and produce concise summaries. These summaries are not original reporting, and individual claims are not necessarily independently verified.
Comparing Perspectives
AI compares how publications with different editorial perspectives cover the same event, identifying differences in emphasis, framing, quoted sources, and context.
When reporting is substantially consistent, we present a shared account rather than manufacturing disagreement.
Understanding Disagreement
We use four levels to describe differences between the articles examined:
These ratings are AI-generated assessments of the specific coverage being compared, not judgments about the overall credibility of a publication. Differences do not necessarily imply intentional bias or deception.
AI and Transparency
Leafcutter News uses artificial intelligence to select stories, summarize reporting, and compare perspectives.
AI can make mistakes, overlook important context, or misinterpret source material. Our summaries and comparisons should be understood as automated interpretations of published reporting, not independently verified accounts.
We provide links to original sources so readers can examine the reporting themselves and draw their own conclusions.
An Ongoing Experiment
Leafcutter News isn't an attempt to eliminate perspective from journalism. It's an experiment in using AI to make those perspectives more visible while making the news easier to understand.
Our format and methodology will continue to evolve as we learn what works.
